Middleton, which was once a part of Lancashire, got its name from the fact that it was the centre of numerous surrounding communities. It was a hundred of Salford ecclesiastical parish governed by aristocratic families. St Leonard’s Church is a Grade I listed structure. The Flodden Window in the sanctuary of the church is claimed to be the UK’s oldest war memorial, commemorating the Middleton archers who fought at the Battle of Flodden in 1513. Middleton was a little town of twenty dwellings in 1770, but it expanded into a flourishing and populated textile manufacturing centre in the 18th and 19th centuries, earning its borough status in 1886. Langley, in the north of the town, was an overspill council estate of Manchester City Council, whilst Alkrington, in the south, is a suburban neighbourhood.
The new Middleton Bus Station, located near the Middleton Arndale shopping area, opened in 2005 to replace the previous one. The station, which cost £4.5 million to build, replaced a 1970s-era station. [22] First Greater Manchester operates the bulk of services in Middleton, with destinations including Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, and Tameside. First Greater Manchester’s 17/18 over ground routes, as well as service 163, provide frequent services to Manchester city centre. Mills Hill railway station is one mile east of the town centre, on the eastern outskirts of the town, offering direct services to Rochdale, Manchester Victoria, Bolton, Wigan, and Leeds. It first opened in 1838 and closed in 1842, but it was reopened in 1985 and is still operational.
